Here are some comments from the WLA program on Autism Awareness in the Library:

Question: What was the most helpful thing you learned at this workshop?

1. How to recognize behaviors that can indicate autism, and how to support autistic patrons that have been identified.
2. Definitions and Interventions, ID qualities, in order to understand behaviors, Rules in simple language
3. Using Steps, Picture Cues
4. More insight into this spectrum
5. Everything was good
6. Idea of having instructions in picture form
7. Great real world examples of behaviors and how to handle them. Thanks!
8. Learning about signs, and how to make things simpler for families using the library – book return basket, signs, etc.
9. Children with autism are not the same. What one presents, the other doesn’t. What works with one doesn’t work with another. This is a great message for staff. Picture clues, pictures clues, picture clues!
10. How to recognize, good ideas on coping
11. Be welcoming to those with needs, visual clues
